We are a friendly, non-competitive, club which aims to improve the swimming ability of children between school-years 1 and 9 inclusive. To join, members must be able to swim 10m using any stroke. We meet every Monday evening during term time. We generally operate on 'inset' days unless several of the schools in our area take the same inset day, and we also exclude public holidays. We run 3 sessions each meeting and the times are shown below. Members move to the later sessions as their ability improves. We use Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, Harbour Road, Portishead. A map can be found here. Access to the car park is from Station Road.

If you are interested in joining The Club please complete the contact form. Be aware that there is a waiting list. When a place becomes available you will be invited to attend an assessment session. We will make a reasonable effort to contact you using the details you provide, so please inform us of any changes. All being well, you will then be offered a place and required to complete an application form.
Please let the club know if you intend to leave so that we may offer your place to someone else as soon as possible.
All junior members of the club must have a responsible adult on site with them at all times. Parents/guardians must ensure that the swimming lessons have not been cancelled before leaving senior swimmers at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre.
The development of each child is monitored by using the ASA’s National Teaching Plan and STA awards. Below is a selection of badges that could be covered. Some members want to progress to competition and join either Backwell or Clevedon swimming clubs.
ASA Learn to Swim framework, also known as the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway, covers Stages 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Whilst the 'pathway' is sponsored by British Gas, the awards that go with them are sponsored by Kellogg's, which may be a little confusing to many parents. Stages 8, 9 and 10 come under the Aquatic Skills framework which covers diving, water polo, synchronised, and competitive swimming, although we only cover water polo.
We try and hold a gala once a year during term 3 just for our own members, and this is the closest we get to competition. Our AGM is generally held during term 1.
Cost. - Subscriptions are set at the AGM and are payable as 3 installments at the start of terms 1, 3 and 5 (or autumn, spring and summer terms in old parlance). We prefer payment by cheque but can accept cash. Cheques are made payable to "Portishead A.S.C.".
Child Protection. - The Club follows the Child Protection guidelines laid out by the Amateur Swimming Association. These procedures and guidelines, as well as other supplementary information regarding Child Protection can be found on the ASA website.
Volunteers. - We rely on volunteers for teaching, administration, and the committee, and are always seeking new people. If you are able to help, please let one of the committee know.
